Pneumonia is the second leading cause of death in Hong Kong. Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common bacterium that can cause pneumonia, lung infections, meningitis, otitis media, sepsis, and other severe diseases, sometimes resulting in death.
According to the guidelines from the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection, it is recommended that everyone aged 2 years and older, as well as seniors aged 65 and above who are at high risk, should receive the pneumococcal vaccine. Vaccination can prevent invasive infections and is widely recognized as one of the most effective measures.
